New York Man Arrested for Filing $400,000 in Fake Accident Claims Against Trucking Companies by Parking Car and Waiting for Semis to Pass — Already Served Prison for Same Scheme a Decade Earlier

0

POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK — A 69-year-old Poughkeepsie man has been arrested for allegedly running a five-year scheme in which he parked his vehicle, waited for semi-trucks to pass, and then submitted fraudulent accident claims under false names to trucking companies and their insurers — netting $400,000 and repeating conduct for which he had already served more than four years in federal prison.

Michael McMahon was arrested on May 7, 2026, on three counts of mail fraud. He was arraigned on May 12 in Albany and released on a $200,000 secured bond.

How the Scheme Worked

According to prosecutors, between December 2020 and December 2025, McMahon parked his vehicle and waited for semi-trucks to drive by. He would then submit fake accident claims — often under a false name — naming a fictitious auto repair shop and providing fraudulent invoices to the trucking company or its insurance carrier. The scheme generated approximately $400,000 over five years.

A Repeat Offender

McMahon previously ran a similar scheme between 2006 and 2011 that netted approximately $80,000, for which he served 51 months in federal prison. The current scheme generated five times as much.

“McMahon committed a long-running insurance swindle between 2006 and 2011 and was imprisoned for it by a federal judge in this District. As alleged in the indictment, he then started up again and stole five times as much. I thank USPIS for its work in detecting this fraud, and I assure the community that my Office will seek stiff penalties against McMahon to punish this unashamed recidivist conduct, recoup the losses to his victims, and deter future fraudsters,” said First Assistant United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III.

“This investigation highlights the commitment of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to dismantling criminal schemes that seek to profit through mail and insurance fraud. Postal Inspectors will continue to combat fraud that impacts the people we serve wherever and however it occurs,” said USPIS New York Division Inspector in Charge Ketty Larco-Ward.

The case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service.

ASHLAND COUNTY, OHIO — Body camera footage released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol shows parts of an OVI arrest on Interstate 71 after a concerned citizen called in reports of a tractor-trailer operating dangerously.

An OSHP sergeant from the Ashland Post responded to the call on April 16 and stopped the commercial vehicle on the shoulder of I-71. Upon approaching the truck, the trooper noticed the trailer door was not properly closed and detected the smell of alcohol on the driver’s breath and inside the cab.

“How do you drive a truck down the road and you don’t close the door? You don’t come back and check it?” the trooper asked the driver during the stop.

The truck driver was subsequently arrested for Operating a Vehicle Impaired.

OSHP reminded the public that if they observe dangerous or impaired driving on Ohio roads, they should safely call troopers at #677.

Driver Killed After Semi-Truck Crashes on I-70 in Colorado

0

DE BEQUE, COLORADO — A semi-truck driver was killed Sunday morning in a crash on westbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 65 outside De Beque, closing the highway for an extended period and diverting traffic to a frontage road.

De Beque Fire Protection District was dispatched to the scene at 6:05 a.m. Sunday. Colorado State Patrol, Grand Valley Fire Protection District, and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office also responded. CSP later confirmed the semi-truck driver was killed in the crash.

Westbound I-70 closed at mile marker 65 as crews worked the scene. Traffic was diverted to the frontage road at the west Parachute exit. One lane was later reopened, though significant activity remained at the scene as responders worked to clear debris.

De Beque Fire Protection District urged drivers passing through the diversion to keep moving at safe speeds and not stop or slow to unsafe speeds in the area. “Use caution, stay alert, and expect delays,” the department said, warning that inattentive drivers in the diversion zone could cause additional crashes.

The crash remains under investigation by Colorado State Patrol.

International Roadcheck Begins Tomorrow; ELD Tampering and Cargo Securement in Focus as Inspectors Prepare to Check 15 Trucks Per Minute Across North America

0

NORTH AMERICA — The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s International Roadcheck — the largest targeted commercial vehicle enforcement program in the world — begins Tuesday, May 12, and runs through Thursday, May 14, 2026. Inspectors across the United States, Canada, and Mexico will conduct Level I inspections at weigh stations, inspection facilities, and pop-up sites throughout the 72-hour blitz, averaging nearly 15 trucks and motorcoaches inspected per minute.

This Year’s Focus Areas

The two focus areas for Roadcheck 2026 are ELD tampering and cargo securement.

On ELD tampering, inspectors will review drivers’ records of duty status with a close eye on false or manipulated entries. CVSA noted that while some inaccurate ELD entries result from misunderstanding regulations, others are deliberately used to conceal hours-of-service violations or driving time — sometimes with no indication the record was edited, as federal regulations require.

On cargo securement, inspectors will pay close attention to how loads are secured. In 2025, 18,108 violations were issued for cargo not secured to prevent leaking, spilling, blowing, or falling, and 16,054 violations were issued for unsecured vehicle components or dunnage. Improper load securement can cause cargo to become dislodged or fall, creating roadway hazards and crashes.

What Inspectors Will Check

Most drivers will undergo a North American Standard Level I Inspection covering both the driver and the vehicle.

The driver portion covers qualifications, license, record of duty status, medical examiner’s certificate, seat belt usage, skill performance evaluation certificate if applicable, and Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse status in the U.S.

The vehicle portion covers brake systems, cargo securement, coupling devices, driveline and driveshaft components, driver’s seat, fuel and exhaust systems, frames, lighting devices, steering mechanisms, suspensions, tires, wheels, rims, hubs, and windshield wipers.

Drivers and vehicles that pass a Level I or Level V inspection with no critical out-of-service violations may receive a CVSA decal, valid for three months.

Cargo Securement Tips

CVSA advises drivers to brace and block cargo properly, ensure loads are contained and immobilized so they cannot leak, spill, blow off, fall, or shift enough to affect vehicle stability. Flatbed cargo should be positioned against a front-end structure or secured with additional tie-downs to prevent forward movement. All dunnage and equipment — including tarps, chains, spare tires, forklifts, and pallet jacks — must be properly secured. Inspect all tie-downs for wear and damage before hitting the road.

Participating Agencies

Roadcheck is sponsored by CVSA with participation from FMCSA, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation. Since its launch in 1988, Roadcheck has produced more than 1.8 million roadside inspections.
