DEWITT, NEW YORK — A Virginia driver wedged a box truck more than three feet too tall under a railroad bridge on North Midler Avenue in DeWitt Thursday afternoon, ripping the right wall of the box partially off and facing charges that went well beyond a simple bridge strike.
The truck was traveling southwest on North Midler Avenue around 3:20 p.m. when it became lodged under the bridge. Deputy Chief Andrew Fusco of the DeWitt Police Department said the truck measured approximately 13 feet 1 inch tall. The bridge clearance sign posted at the structure reads 10 feet.
The driver, Derrick Gordon of Virginia, was not injured. The truck bore the logo of West Service Center Inc., an auto repair and maintenance company based in Chesapeake, Virginia. Gordon was charged with driving on a suspended commercial driver’s license along with several other traffic violations. CSX personnel inspected the bridge and found no structural damage. The truck was towed from the scene.
