NEWARK, NEW JERSEY — A tractor-trailer struck a concrete median barrier on Interstate 280 in Newark on Wednesday afternoon, October 28, leaving the front of the truck partially hanging over the roadway below, sending several people to hospitals, and snarling the evening commute.

The crash happened just before 3 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 13.1, west of Exit 13 for Orange Street and First Street. Firefighters, rescue personnel, and hazardous materials teams responded. Images from the scene show the cab extending over the concrete barrier, with debris scattered across the roadway.

Emergency reports indicate several people were taken to area hospitals. Other drivers were involved in the crash, but the extent of their injuries has not been confirmed.

Hazmat crews responded to a fuel leak from the truck’s saddle tank. Initial reports said the leaking fuel had not reached nearby storm drains. Authorities requested specialized rescue equipment and a heavy-duty tow truck for the recovery.

Three of the five left lanes on eastbound I-280 and two of the five left lanes on westbound I-280 were closed for hours. Congestion extended in both directions and onto surrounding Newark streets. Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
