VALLEY TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA — A 29-year-old Lock Haven man was killed Monday morning, October 26, after he stopped on Interstate 80 to help a driver who had been hit by a tractor-trailer that kept going, and a second tractor-trailer left the roadway and struck him, the Montour County Coroner’s Office said.

Logan Rickert stopped on eastbound I-80 between mile markers 224 and 225 shortly before 6 a.m. to help another driver. That driver’s pickup truck had been hit in a crash with a tractor-trailer that did not stop, and the impact pushed the pickup partially off the road. Rickert got out of his own pickup to help when another tractor-trailer left the roadway for an unknown reason and hit him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Part of eastbound I-80 was shut down, and the crash caused a significant backlog. Traffic was reduced to one lane for much of the morning.

The coroner’s office is assisting Pennsylvania State Police with the investigation. Troopers said the driver of the tractor-trailer that hit Rickert has been identified. It is unclear whether any charges will be filed. The tractor-trailer that hit the pickup and left the scene has not been identified in the reports.

Reports differ slightly on the first crash. One described a hit-and-run involving a pickup, and another described Rickert stopping to help a disabled tractor-trailer. I used the account that came with the coroner’s office details.
