MURRIETA, CALIFORNIA — A Border Patrol K9 named Loki led agents to nearly 1,000 pounds of liquid methamphetamine hidden inside a bobtail semi-truck’s fuel tank during a traffic stop on Interstate 15 in the San Diego sector on September 29, resulting in the seizure of approximately 115 gallons of liquid meth valued at an estimated $1 million.
San Diego Sector U.S. Border Patrol agents conducted the traffic stop at 11 a.m. on the northbound semi traveling without a trailer, approximately a quarter mile north of the California Highway Patrol scales. K9 Loki alerted agents to characteristics of liquid methamphetamine concealed inside at least one of the truck’s fuel tanks.
The vehicle and driver were transported to the Newton-Azrak Border Patrol Station where hazardous response specialists safely extracted the liquid from the tank. It tested positive for methamphetamine, yielding a total weight of 962 pounds.
The driver, a Mexican national, was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations and local authorities for prosecution. The semi-truck was seized by U.S. Border Patrol.
“This massive seizure of liquid methamphetamine highlights the lengths these transnational criminal organizations will go to smuggle hard narcotics into our communities,” said Chief Patrol Agent Justin M. De La Torre. “The vigilance of our agents, the reliability of our K-9 units, and our strong multi-agency partnerships are vital to dismantling these illicit smuggling operations and keeping deadly drugs off our streets.”
