LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA — Long Beach Police have released surveillance photos of a semi-truck driver who fled the scene after striking and fatally injuring a 68-year-old bicyclist near West Pacific Coast Highway and Canal Avenue on the night of September 4 — a crash that wasn’t even identified as a vehicle collision until a medical examiner reviewed the victim’s injuries six days later.

Kevin Moran, a Long Beach resident, was riding westbound on the south sidewalk around 11:03 p.m. when a semi-truck exiting a restaurant parking lot turned right onto eastbound Pacific Coast Highway and struck him. The driver fled. First responders initially responded to reports of a man who had fallen from his bicycle and transported Moran to a hospital, where he died the following day.

It wasn’t until September 10 that the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner notified collision investigators that Moran’s injuries were consistent with a traffic collision — not a fall. Police then launched an investigation that established a semi-truck had been involved and obtained surveillance footage of the driver and vehicle.

The driver is described as a man wearing a yellow reflective safety vest, black shirt, jeans, a black hat, and black shoes. The vehicle is described as a white semi-truck tractor pulling a blue trailer with an orange container. Speed is being investigated as a possible factor.

No arrest has been made. Anyone who witnessed the crash, has dashcam or surveillance footage from the area, or recognizes the driver or truck is asked to contact Long Beach Police Collision Investigation Detail Detective Paredes at 562-570-7358. Anonymous tips can be submitted to LA Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS or through the P3 Tips app.
