NEEDLES, CALIFORNIA — CHP’s Needles Area stopped two commercial truck drivers for speeds above 90 mph in the same week, more than 35 mph over California’s 55 mph limit for commercial trucks.
On November 5, an officer stopped a semi-truck after seeing it travel 93 mph on Interstate 40. “At that speed, a fully loaded semi-truck becomes an enormous danger to everyone on the road,” CHP said. “Increased stopping distances, reduced reaction time, and the potential for catastrophic collisions make excessive speed in commercial vehicles especially dangerous.”
Earlier that week, officers on routine patrol stopped a second commercial motor vehicle traveling 98 mph in a posted 55 mph zone, while passing other vehicles in the area. “We encourage everyone to drive responsibly and adhere to posted speed limits,” CHP said. “Reckless driving puts everyone on the road at risk, and we must work together to ensure our communities, and the motoring public, stay safe.”
CHP reminded the trucking community that California law generally limits vehicles transporting property to 55 mph. “That’s not a suggestion, it’s the law!” The Needles Area said it “remains committed to holding dangerous drivers accountable and keeping California’s highways safe. Big rigs. Big responsibility. ZERO excuses for reckless speeds.”
CHP did not release the drivers’ names, say where the 98 mph stop took place, or say what citations were issued.
