KAY COUNTY, OKLAHOMA — Local cowboys roped and secured escaped calves after a cattle hauler overturned on Interstate 35 near mile marker 208 in Kay County on Friday morning, November 6, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.
Troopers responded to the overturned trailer, which was loaded with calves. Some of the calves did not survive. Those that got out were loose along the highway and the surrounding area. Troopers called on local cowboys, who responded without hesitation and used their skills to rope and secure the calves and help bring the scene under control.

OHP named the cowboys who helped: Tyler Jeffries, Charlie Brandon, TJ Langston, Jeremiah Chafin, and Chris Fagan. “We appreciate these cowboys for stepping up when they were needed,” the patrol said.
OHP also thanked Tonkawa EMS and Fire, the Kay County Sheriff’s Office, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, and Strickland Wrecker Service.
“Our Chargers may have 370 horsepower under the hood, but this morning we were reminded that sometimes one horsepower, the four-legged kind, is the better option,” the patrol said.
The post did not say what caused the crash, whether the driver was hurt, or how many calves were lost.
