Driver Shoots Himself After SUV Crashes Into Back of Hazmat Semi on I-80 Near Utah-Nevada Border

TOOELE COUNTY, UTAH — A driver is in critical condition Monday after crashing his SUV into the back of a semi-truck on eastbound Interstate 80 near the Utah-Nevada border and then shooting himself following the crash.

Utah Highway Patrol Lieutenant Cameron Roden said a black SUV struck the rear of a semi-truck hauling hazardous material at approximately milepost 4.5 on eastbound I-80 in Tooele County. After the crash, the SUV driver exited his vehicle and shot himself. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

UHP confirmed there were no hazmat issues related to the incident. Eastbound I-80 closed for several hours following the crash and did not reopen until approximately 10 p.m. Residual delays were possible.
