PIPERTON, TENNESSEE — A railroad bridge in Fayette County collapsed after being struck by a commercial vehicle, prompting an indefinite road closure and halting Norfolk Southern train traffic along the affected route.

The Fayette County Emergency Management Agency announced on May 11, 2026, that a section of Ballard Road north of Highway 57 in Piperton is closed until further notice following the collapse. Officials attributed the bridge failure to a commercial vehicle accident that damaged the structure. No injuries were reported.

As a result of the collapse, Norfolk Southern has halted train traffic on what officials described as a primary route. No timeline for reopening has been provided.
