MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE — A driver was hospitalized after a large metal pipe fell from a tractor-trailer load and pierced through a car on Interstate 55 in Memphis, according to police.
The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the I-55 and Third Street interchange.
Metal Pipe Went Through Car
Memphis Police said officers arrived and found a semi-truck on I-55 northbound hauling a load of metal pipes.
Investigators said the load struck a train bridge, and one of the metal pipes struck a black vehicle.
Photos from the scene showed the metal object running through the car’s windshield and roof and extending deep into the vehicle. The car’s airbags were also deployed.
One woman was transported to the hospital with non-critical injuries.
Debris Also Hit Another Semi
Police said debris from the bridge also struck a white semi-truck.
A third driver told officers the tractor-trailer was traveling on I-55 when its load hit the bridge. The driver said that when the load fell from the trailer, it struck the second vehicle head-on, while debris damaged the third vehicle.
Police said the third vehicle sustained damage to its front windshield, radiator, and front bumper.
Truck Driver Cited
The tractor-trailer driver told officers he did not understand how the crash happened.
Police said the driver was cited for hitting a fixed object.
Interstate 55 was partially blocked after the crash, but traffic later cleared.
The incident remains under investigation.
