MONONA, WISCONSIN — Monona Police have released dashcam footage from a semi-truck involved in a serious four-vehicle crash on the eastbound Beltline on September 2, describing the video as an urgent reminder of how quickly things can go wrong when drivers are inattentive in work zones.
The driver of the semi, Darin D. Oberhart, 58, of Iowa, was issued multiple citations including Inattentive Driving and Too Fast for Conditions in a Work/Construction Zone. The crash resulted in multiple injuries. The most seriously injured person — the driver of the vehicle directly struck by the semi — sustained multiple bone fractures and remains in serious but stable condition. At least two of the vehicles involved are believed to be totaled.
Monona Police and Wisconsin State Patrol reviewed additional evidence as part of the ongoing investigation. Police said the investigation does not currently support a criminal referral despite the severity of the injuries, though that determination could change if additional information establishes the elements of a criminal offense. If so, the case would be referred to the Dane County District Attorney’s Office.
MOPD said it has been in contact with WisDOT to explore ways to make the construction zone safer for motorists and workers as construction continues.
“The dashcam video from this crash was extremely difficult and frustrating to watch,” Chief Chaney wrote in the release. “Seconds count. Lives matter. Pay attention and slow down.”
