HOMER, NEW YORK — A 34-year-old water truck driver was hospitalized Monday morning after a tire failure on northbound Interstate 81 in the Town of Homer caused the truck to leave the roadway and roll over, with the force of the crash separating both the tank and cab from the chassis.
New York State Police responded to the crash near mile marker 58.6 around 6:33 a.m. on August 25. A Cortland Police Department officer in the area was first on scene and reported the rollover. Homer Fire, TLC Ambulance, and State Police all responded.
The driver was transported by TLC Ambulance to SUNY Upstate Medical Center for injuries sustained in the crash. The extent of those injuries was not immediately released.
The right northbound lane of I-81 remained closed as of 9 a.m. while crews cleaned up the scene. Motorists were asked to use caution in the area. The investigation remains ongoing.
