HANOVER, VIRGINIA — A tractor-trailer carrying approximately 40,000 pounds of peanuts overturned in the median of Interstate 95 in Hanover Friday morning after a front tire blew out, damaging guardrails in both directions, rupturing the fuel tank, and closing left lanes on both the northbound and southbound sides.
Virginia State Police said the crash occurred around 11:09 a.m. The northbound truck veered left after the blowout and overturned in the median. The crash caused significant damage to guardrails on both sides of the interstate and damaged pavement along the northbound shoulder. The diesel fuel tank ruptured, spilling an estimated 25 to 50 gallons of fuel. Hazmat personnel were requested to assess the spill. Fire officials said there is no threat to nearby waterways.
Left lanes in both directions were closed as crews worked to right the trailer. Significant delays and extended lane closures were expected. Drivers were urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. The crash remains under investigation.
