MESQUITE, TEXAS — A 30-year-old truck driver from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico was arrested on a driving while intoxicated charge after a 36-year-old Dallas man died when his white Alfa Romeo sedan slammed into the trailer of the slow-moving 18-wheeler on northbound Interstate 635 in Mesquite early Wednesday morning — though police noted the alleged intoxication may not have been a contributing factor to the crash itself.
Mesquite Police Department responded at 3:17 a.m. on September 9 to the 21100 block of northbound IH-635 near North Gross Road. Jose Aguilar Renteria was driving his Alfa Romeo sedan northbound when it struck the trailer of the 18-wheeler driven by Ulises Mendez Hernandez. Renteria was declared dead at the scene. Mendez Hernandez was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated.
A department spokesperson noted that while Mendez Hernandez faces a DWI charge, the alleged intoxication may not have been a contributing factor to the crash occurring. The truck was described as moving slowly at the time of impact.
The Mesquite Police Department Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate. The legal distinction between the current charge and any more severe charges that could potentially follow remains a question as the investigation proceeds.
