COOL, CALIFORNIA — State Route 49 was closed in both directions between Cool and Auburn for several hours Monday afternoon after a semi truck overturned north of Teichert Quarry, requiring a tow truck for recovery. No injuries were reported.
CHP Placerville Division reported the closure around 2:40 p.m. on August 10, between Borland Avenue and Lincoln Way in Auburn and the SR-193 junction in Cool. No detour was available and no estimated time of reopening was given at the time. The road has since fully reopened.
CHP noted that SR-49 between I-80 and US-50 is restricted for trucks. Only vehicles under 65 feet in combination with a kingpin to rear axle length under 40 feet are permitted on the route. Longer combinations are prohibited because the road cannot safely accommodate them without crossing centerlines.
“SR-49 is not made for longer truck/tractor combinations to pass through. It is a safety hazard for other motorists due to the inability of the truck to safely negotiate the roadway without crossing over the center lines,” CHP previously stated.
