KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI — A semi-truck hauling more than 120 head of cattle fell off a bridge onto another vehicle on Interstate 70 near Admiral Boulevard in downtown Kansas City early Sunday morning, sending cattle scattering across the metro as far as Kansas City, Kansas — and prompting a wide-area roundup using drones and thermal imaging while the east side of the downtown loop remained closed.

Kansas City Fire Department said crews responded just before 3 a.m. on October 18 to the two-vehicle crash. One person from each vehicle was hospitalized. As of 12:25 p.m. both were reported in stable condition.

Some of the cattle did not survive the crash. Some remained in the trailer. But many scattered widely across the city. Reports came in from I-70 and Van Brunt all the way to Pershing and Main near Crown Center, to the Downtown Airport at 169, and into Kansas City, Kansas.

“We’ve had reports from I-70 and Van Brunt to Main and Pershing to the Downtown Airport at 169, and KCK’s got a couple reports of a few cattle in that area, so they are widespread,” said KCFD Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins. “I guess after the accident they just got on the move, so yeah, they’re all over the place.”

KCPD called in resources to help wrangle the cattle and deployed drones and thermal imaging to track them down across the metro. The east side of the downtown loop remained closed. The number of cattle still unaccounted for had not been confirmed.

Residents who spot loose cattle are asked not to approach them and to call the KCPD non-emergency line at 816-234-5111 or dial 311. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution in the area.
