GRANT, NEBRASKA — A chain reaction crash on Highway 23 just east of Grant Monday morning sent a horse to the veterinary hospital, spilled distiller’s grain across the highway, and caused severe damage to a pickup cab — while all humans involved walked away without injury.
The Perkins County Sheriff’s Office said first responders were dispatched around 8:30 a.m. to the crash near the asphalt batch plant. A westbound semi had stopped on the highway waiting to turn into the plant, with a pickup hauling a stock trailer stopped directly behind it. A second westbound semi hauling distiller’s grain failed to stop in time and rear-ended the stock trailer.
The impact caused the pickup’s gooseneck to become unhitched, doing severe damage to the cab. Safety chains are believed to have prevented further damage before the front of the pickup struck the rear of the first semi’s trailer. The grain spill temporarily closed the highway.
The single horse inside the stock trailer was transported to Perkins County Veterinary Hospital for evaluation for injuries and stress. No human injuries were reported.
Nebraska Department of Transportation used power brooms to clear the spilled grain while the Grant Volunteer Fire Department washed down the roadway. Madrid Fire and Rescue also assisted with scene management and traffic control.
