ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MISSOURI — A 52-year-old truck driver was killed Wednesday afternoon after his tractor-trailer clipped the back of an SUV on Interstate 255 near Koch Road, left the highway, tore through a fence, went down an embankment, crossed two yards, knocked down trees and a fire hydrant, and crashed into a home — with rocks from the impact also smashing through the sides of two nearby houses.
Missouri State Highway Patrol said the crash occurred around 2 p.m. The SUV, driven by a 73-year-old woman with a 14-year-old girl as a passenger, slid off the road to the left and struck a concrete barrier after being clipped. The tractor-trailer went off to the right, crossed the outer road, and struck three houses and two parked cars before coming to rest.
The truck driver died at the scene. His name has not been released. The woman and the teenage girl both sustained minor injuries and were transported to a hospital.
Homeowner James Kosick said he was sitting in his living room when the crash happened. His wife was in their sewing room. He described the impact as sounding like an earthquake.
“The couple then saw a semi tractor trailer crashed into their house and two cars parked in their front driveway,” MSHP said. Neither Kosick nor his wife was injured though paramedics checked them out at the scene.
Eastbound I-255 was closed following the crash and reopened around 4 p.m. Outer Road 255 near the crash was also closed in both directions.
