JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA — A milk tanker tractor-trailer rolled off a farm driveway and landed on its roof on New Schaefferstown Road in Jefferson Township Friday night, spilling an estimated 4,000 gallons of milk and approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel close to a residential home and a downhill well.
Rescues 29 and 27, Engine 29, Utility 29, and EMS were dispatched around 8:40 p.m. Deputy 29 arrived to find the milk tanker on its roof and leaking. Engine 27 and Spill 27 were requested for additional suppression support given the truck’s proximity to the house. Crews from stations 29 and 27 formed a dam to contain the leaking fluids. Twelve bags of oil dry were applied to minimize soil saturation, with particular concern for a well located downhill from the spill.
V&M Towing was called to the scene along with Keystone Environmental, which handled cleanup of the contaminants. Bethel Community Ambulance transported the driver to a hospital for evaluation. Crews cleared the scene and returned to their stations around midnight.
