DES MOINES, IOWA — Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation September 10 temporarily waiving weight limit restrictions for trucks hauling agricultural products during the 2026 harvest season, allowing qualifying loads of up to 90,000 pounds to operate without a permit through October 10.
The waiver applies to trucks hauling soybeans, corn, hay, straw, silage, stover, dry and liquid fertilizer, dry and liquid manure, and distillers grains on all Iowa roadways except the interstate system.
Key Rules
Gross weight may not exceed 90,000 pounds. Axle weights may exceed standard limits by no more than 12.5%. Single axles are limited to 20,000 pounds. Posted weight limits on roads and bridges must still be obeyed. The interstate system is excluded entirely.
The proclamation was issued due to concerns that strict compliance with standard permit and weight requirements would hinder time-sensitive harvest activities across all Iowa counties. The Iowa Department of Public Safety was directed to monitor operations to ensure public safety and facilitate the movement of harvest trucks.
The waiver expires October 10, 2026, unless terminated or extended sooner by the governor.
