Indianapolis Police Urge Truckers to Avoid 12-Foot-4-Inch Downtown Railroad Bridge After Repeated Strikes Causing Gridlock and Draining Police Resources

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is calling on commercial vehicle operators to reroute away from a low-clearance railroad bridge near 300 S. Meridian Street after a persistent surge of trucks striking or getting wedged beneath the structure — creating severe gridlock, disrupting commuters, and pulling police resources away from downtown public safety operations.

The bridge has a clearance of just 12 feet 4 inches. IMPD said drivers repeatedly realize too late that their vehicles exceed the limit, locking up traffic and requiring police response each time.

IMPD is directing commercial drivers to use truck-specific navigation platforms that flag low-clearance structures, weight limits, and approved freight corridors. For north-south travel through the downtown corridor, police outlined the following detour options: Washington Street west to West Street; Maryland Street to South Pennsylvania Street or South East Street; or South Street for eastbound or westbound bypass.

IMPD urged fleet managers, dispatchers, and drivers to share the advisory across their networks. “Proactive route planning eliminates preventable property damage and severe commuting delays,” police said.
