DE BEQUE, COLORADO — A semi-truck driver was killed Sunday morning in a crash on westbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 65 outside De Beque, closing the highway for an extended period and diverting traffic to a frontage road.
De Beque Fire Protection District was dispatched to the scene at 6:05 a.m. Sunday. Colorado State Patrol, Grand Valley Fire Protection District, and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office also responded. CSP later confirmed the semi-truck driver was killed in the crash.
Westbound I-70 closed at mile marker 65 as crews worked the scene. Traffic was diverted to the frontage road at the west Parachute exit. One lane was later reopened, though significant activity remained at the scene as responders worked to clear debris.
De Beque Fire Protection District urged drivers passing through the diversion to keep moving at safe speeds and not stop or slow to unsafe speeds in the area. “Use caution, stay alert, and expect delays,” the department said, warning that inattentive drivers in the diversion zone could cause additional crashes.
The crash remains under investigation by Colorado State Patrol.
