DERBY, CONNECTICUT — A truck driver was heavily entrapped inside a badly damaged cab early Monday morning after the tractor-trailer struck a stone wall on Derby Avenue outside St. Michael’s Church at approximately 4:40 a.m., requiring a 45-minute multi-agency extrication using specialized hydraulic rescue equipment before the driver could be freed.
Storm Engine Company and Ambulance Corps responded alongside the Derby Fire Department, Ansonia Fire Department, Shelton Fire Department, Ansonia Rescue and Medical Services, Valley Emergency Medical Services, and the Derby Police Department. Tracy’s Service Station also responded with heavy-duty recovery equipment to help stabilize and manage the tractor-trailer during the rescue operation.
The driver was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment. The extent of injuries was not immediately known. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
“Incidents involving large commercial vehicles present significant challenges due to their size, weight, construction, and the forces involved in a collision,” Storm Engine Company said. “This was truly a tremendous team effort by every agency and organization involved.”
