STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA — CHP Officer Michaelson was patrolling Interstate 5 in the Stockton area when he spotted a commercial truck doing 76 mph in the number two lane — passing other commercial vehicles and traveling 21 mph over California’s 55 mph maximum speed limit for trucks. The driver was stopped and cited.
CHP Stockton used the stop as a reminder that California’s 55 mph limit for commercial vehicles applies regardless of the higher posted speed limit for other traffic, and that commercial vehicles are restricted from certain lanes depending on the roadway.
“A fully loaded commercial vehicle can weigh tens of thousands of pounds and requires significantly more time and distance to stop. Add excessive speed, and the driver has even less time to react when traffic conditions suddenly change. The consequences of a collision can be severe,” CHP said.
“Slow down. Stay alert. Stay in your lane. Arrive alive.”
