NEW KENT COUNTY, VIRGINIA — A tractor-trailer driver was killed early Friday morning after a commercial car hauler crashed, overturned, and caught fire on Interstate 64 in New Kent County, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash happened at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 4 on westbound I-64 near the 220-mile marker, close to the Route 33 exit.
Car Hauler Hit Concrete Median Barrier
Virginia State Police said the commercial car hauler was traveling westbound when it struck the concrete barrier in the median.
The impact caused the cab to straddle the barrier and overturn before catching fire.
The trailer, which was transporting several vehicles, remained upright.
Driver Died at Scene
State police said the driver was the only person inside the tractor-trailer.
The driver died at the scene.
Authorities said they are working to positively identify the driver and notify next of kin.
Cleanup Expected to Take Hours
Virginia State Police said the crash and resulting fire created an extensive cleanup operation that was expected to continue for several hours.
Officials advised drivers to check with the Virginia Department of Transportation for the latest information on traffic impacts, lane closures, and reopening.
The crash remains under investigation.
