MATTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA — An Edmonton tractor-trailer driver was stopped for speeding on Highway 11 east of Mattawa on October 11 and an investigation into his logbook revealed he had somehow completed a trip that takes nearly 17 hours in just 12 — triggering 12 charges against the driver and three more against his carrier.

Ontario Provincial Police clocked the semi traveling at 115 km/h (approximately 71 mph) in a 90 km/h (55 mph) zone around 9 a.m. When officers examined the driver’s paper records, they found the trip from Kenora to North Bay was logged as completed in 12 hours. Google Maps puts that same route at just under 17 hours by passenger vehicle — meaning the driver would have had to maintain impossible speeds the entire way, or simply falsified the record.

“During the investigation, officers determined the driver had been operating the commercial vehicle in contravention of multiple hours-of-service and record-keeping requirements,” OPP said.

The driver’s 12 charges included speeding, exceeding 13 hours of driving time in a day, failing to take 10 hours off in a day, driving 16 hours since the last qualifying off-duty period, and falsifying, mutilating, or defacing a record or document. The carrier faces three charges including permitting the driver to operate a commercial motor vehicle without a working speed-limiting system. The tractor-trailer was placed out of service for 72 hours.
