SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — A truck cab was left dangling off the side of Interstate 5 in the Mission Hills neighborhood Tuesday morning after colliding with a sedan, spilling fuel across the freeway and catching fire. Four people in the sedan were taken to the hospital.

The crash happened around 10 a.m. on October 20 on northbound I-5 near Washington Street. San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Candace Hadley said a sedan and a truck collided, sending the front half of the truck over the side of the freeway. The cab was on fire when firefighters arrived.

All four people in the sedan were transported to the hospital. Two men inside the truck refused medical care. The extent of everyone’s injuries is not known.

Fuel spilled across the freeway, which slowed cleanup. Severe delays were reported in both directions, with only a couple of lanes open on each side at one point. Traffic was diverted to Sassafras Street. Delays were expected to last a couple of hours.

Note: NBC San Diego and San Diego Fire-Rescue described the vehicle as a box truck, while the CHP post and some outlets called it a semi truck. I used “truck” throughout since the reports conflict. Let me know if you’d like it labeled one way.
