CHINO VALLEY, ARIZONA — A semi-truck carrying hydrated lime powder crashed and rolled over on State Route 89 near mile marker 333 in Chino Valley on Thursday night, November 5, triggering a multi-agency hazmat response. The driver was trapped inside, was cut free, and was taken to the hospital.

The Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority was called around 10:52 p.m. Firefighters found the truck heavily damaged and white powder covering the area. Crews set up a safety perimeter to limit access and protect people nearby.

The driver was quickly extricated, assessed, and decontaminated, then taken by CAFMA Rescue 62 to Yavapai Regional Medical Center. His condition is unknown. CAFMA and Prescott Fire Department hazmat personnel evaluated the substance and confirmed it was hydrated lime.

A CAFMA firefighter was taken to the hospital as a precaution after experiencing irritation from the chemical. The firefighter was released later that night and returned to work.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety, Arizona Department of Transportation, Chino Valley Police Department, Copperstate Ambulance, Prescott Fire Department, and Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.

The reports did not say what caused the rollover or how long the highway was closed.
