TACOMA, WASHINGTON — A semi-truck hauling bananas caught fire on northbound Interstate 5 in Tacoma early Friday, October 30, blocking three lanes for hours and causing major backups. No one was hurt.

The fire broke out in the rear of the trailer around 5:20 a.m. in the northbound lanes, not far from the Puyallup River Bridge. The Washington State Patrol said the driver quickly disconnected the cab and pulled away from the burning trailer.

The burned trailer blocked the three right lanes of northbound I-5 for hours as crews dealt with the aftermath.

Troopers said it was too early to determine an official cause, but they believe the fire may have started in the trailer’s brakes.
