LAREDO, TEXAS — U.S. Border Patrol agents found 23 people, including six unaccompanied minors, hidden inside vans being hauled on a car hauler at a Laredo checkpoint, and the driver now faces federal human smuggling charges.

Border Patrol detailed the case on October 26. A car hauler carrying multiple vans entered the checkpoint, and agents found the 23 people concealed inside the vans on the trailer. “The vans’ windows were closed with no air flow in the brutal South Texas heat,” the agency said.

The driver faces federal charges for human smuggling. The 23 people found in the vans will be processed for deportation.
“Human smuggling is dangerous, reckless, and puts innocent lives at risk,” Border Patrol said.

The agency did not release the driver’s name or say when the stop took place.
