HAYWARD, CALIFORNIA — A Tesla semi-truck caught fire on southbound Interstate 880 near Route 92 in Hayward on Tuesday evening, October 27, forcing a full closure of both directions for hours because of the risk of hazardous smoke. The driver told the California Highway Patrol he had no idea why the truck burst into flames.

The fire started around 5:35 p.m. By 5:45 p.m., CHP had shut down both northbound and southbound lanes from Winton Avenue to Route 92. CHP Hayward’s alert listed southbound closed between A Street and SR-92 and northbound closed between Jackson Street and Winton Avenue, with no estimated time for reopening. Motorists were told to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

CHP said the truck’s lithium battery fire was extremely difficult to extinguish. Northbound lanes reopened at 8:40 p.m. Southbound lanes stayed closed until about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, when the fire was out. One estimate had the fire burning 15 to 18 hours.

No injuries were reported. The driver told officers only that the rig caught fire, and the exact cause has not been confirmed.
