FALMOUTH, MAINE — A tractor-trailer tanker overturned on the southbound Maine Turnpike near mile marker 56 in Falmouth early Wednesday morning after the SUV ahead of it lost power and stopped in the travel lane, leaving the truck driver with no time to fully avoid it.

Maine State Police said the crash occurred around 2:35 a.m. The SUV had stalled in the travel lane. The tanker driver attempted to move into the right lane to avoid it but struck the rear passenger side of the SUV, pushing it toward the median before the tractor-trailer tipped onto its right side.

The driver and passenger in the SUV and the tanker driver were all transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland for evaluation. No serious injuries were reported. A small amount of diesel fuel leaked from the tanker and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection responded to the scene.

All southbound lanes were closed with traffic diverted at Exit 63. The tractor-trailer has since been removed and all lanes have reopened. The crash remains under investigation.
