HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA — A murder charge against a Huntsville truck driver who shot and killed his co-driver during an in-cab altercation in October 2022 has been reduced to manslaughter after the state reviewed the evidence, and Edwin Mayes has accepted a 20-year split sentence that will see him serve five years in prison followed by five years of supervised probation. He was booked into Madison County Jail on September 21.
The confrontation between Mayes and co-driver Kyle Mackey occurred inside Mayes’ 18-wheeler near Pulaski Pike in Huntsville. Mayes maintained that Mackey physically attacked him and that he fired in self-defense. The defense argued that the confined space of the truck cab and a significant size disparity between the two men were critical factors in Mayes’ perception of the threat. Mackey was approximately 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighed more than 300 pounds. Mayes was nearly a foot shorter and roughly half Mackey’s weight.
Mayes requested immunity based on self-defense at a pretrial hearing in April 2025. A judge rejected the claim and the case remained pending for trial. The state later offered to reduce the murder charge to manslaughter after reviewing the evidence.
“This case cannot be understood by looking only at its tragic ending,” said defense attorney Nick Lough. “Mr. Mayes was inside the confined cab of his own 18-wheeler when the situation became physical. He was facing a man who was nearly a foot taller and approximately twice his weight, with very little room to move away from the confrontation. Those facts mattered.”
Co-counsel Marcus Helstowski said the resolution reflected the complexity of the case. “The agreement recognizes that the circumstances of this case were more complicated than the original charge suggested and provides a fair and certain resolution.”
