CALIFORNIA — When a flatbed tow truck carrying a land speed record jet car rolled through the CHP Nimitz Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility, inspectors had an unusual question to answer: was a small red flag enough to satisfy California’s projecting load requirements?
The answer was yes — but with an important detail. Tow truck drivers are permitted to place removable magnetic tail lamps on the rear of towed vehicles. In this case, the driver placed those lamps on the tow truck stinger, which satisfied the legal requirement for the projecting load. The truck passed inspection and the jet car continued on its way to its new home at a museum.
