WINSLOW, ARIZONA — A truck driver was cited and placed out of service after a fellow trucker called police to report an unsafe commercial vehicle on Interstate 40 between Flagstaff and Winslow — and investigators found the driver had been hauling down the highway for five hours after removing a tire, chaining up a damaged axle, and skipping the repairs entirely, all while failing to maintain a required logbook.
An AZDPS Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Unit trooper tracked the vehicle to the westbound rest area near Meteor Crater, where it was parked. The driver confirmed the axle problem had occurred about five hours earlier and that rather than stopping for proper repairs, he had improvised and kept driving.
The driver received several citations and was placed out of service.
“Operating a commercial vehicle in this condition is extremely dangerous and puts everyone on the roadway at risk. If you encounter an unsafe vehicle, never hesitate to report it. Your call could prevent a serious crash,” AZDPS said.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
