GRINNELL, IOWA — A 64-year-old Dixon man was extricated from his cab and airlifted to a Des Moines-area hospital Tuesday afternoon after his semi-truck was struck by a westbound Iowa Interstate Railroad engine just east of Grinnell.
Poweshiek County Communications Center received a 911 call shortly before 4:30 p.m. Emergency crews arrived at the 3800 block of 50th Street and found the tractor-trailer on the south side of the railroad tracks with the driver, Marvin Scharff, still inside. Grinnell firefighters used extrication tools to remove him from the cab and managed fuel and other fluids from the semi.
Scharff was initially transported to Grinnell Regional Medical Center before being flown by helicopter to a Des Moines-area hospital. His condition was not available.
The Iowa State Patrol is investigating. Assisting agencies included the Grinnell Fire Department, Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office, Grinnell Police Department, Poweshiek County Emergency Management, and the Poweshiek County Road Department.
