ELK GROVE, CALIFORNIA — A stolen vehicle report filed with CHP turned into a multi-agency recovery effort that ended with Elk Grove detectives finding an abandoned trailer loaded with $170,000 worth of Tesla materials on the side of a road in their city, bringing the total recovered stolen property value to over $240,000.
CHP East took the initial stolen vehicle report on the semi-truck and trailer. CHP South located the truck shortly after, but the trailer and its cargo were still missing. CHP then reached out to SACCATS — the Sacramento County Auto Theft Suppression Task Force — which passed a tip to Elk Grove Police that the trailer might be in their city.
Elk Grove property crimes detectives ran with the lead and found the trailer abandoned on the roadside — with all the stolen Tesla materials still inside.
“Our detectives went to work. They took that lead and ran. They were able to locate that trailer, not just the trailer, but all of the stolen materials inside,” said Elk Grove Police spokesperson Julissa Ortiz. “We had a positive result out of this.”
Police used the recovery to remind the public that abandoned trailers along the roadway are worth reporting. “Someone may have seen that trailer and didn’t think anything of it,” Ortiz said. “We do say, ‘If you see something, say something.'”
Whether any arrests were made and who the truck and trailer belonged to had not been publicly confirmed.
