HOPEWELL, VIRGINIA — Fire crews responded to Interstate 295 after a tractor-trailer hauling acetone caught fire near the 12-mile marker, according to Hopewell Fire & EMS.
The fire was reported at approximately 12:36 p.m. when Hopewell Fire & EMS was dispatched to a vehicle fire on I-295.
While units were responding, crews learned that a tractor-trailer carrying acetone had an active brake fire involving the rear axle of the trailer.
Rear Axle Heavily Involved in Fire
Hopewell Fire & EMS responded with two engines and a Battalion Chief. The Fire Marshal and Emergency Manager also responded.
Prince George County Fire & EMS also responded to the incident.
When crews arrived, they found the rear axle of the trailer heavily involved in fire, with Prince George crews already applying water.
The fire was brought under control within minutes, and crews continued cooling the affected axle and trailer.
Hazmat Team Checked Fully Loaded Tanker
Hopewell crews assisted Prince George by supplying additional water during the extended cooling operation.
Because the tanker was fully loaded with acetone, the Crater Regional Hazardous Materials Team was requested to evaluate the tanker for any leaks or product involvement.
Officials said no leaks were found, and the acetone remained contained inside the tanker.
No Injuries Reported
Once the fire was extinguished and the tanker was confirmed safe, fire units cleared the scene.
No injuries were reported to the driver, firefighters, or police personnel.
Officials said some delays could continue while responders and towing crews worked to investigate and clear the incident.
