JACKSON, WYOMING — Teton Pass closed in both directions Tuesday morning, October 27, after overnight snow at the summit left WY-22 slick, with at least one semi stuck trying to climb the pass and multiple commercial vehicles, including semis and buses, sliding in the roadway.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation issued a driver alert at 9:42 a.m. closing the pass because of “winter conditions and crashes westbound from Wilson to the Idaho state line.” WYDOT reopened the road about 30 minutes later, at 10:12 a.m.
A temporary trailer ban was imposed on the pass around 11 p.m. Monday, and WYDOT issued Level 1 chain restrictions on and off through the night. By Tuesday morning, traffic was backed up all the way into Victor, Idaho. Four-wheel-drive vehicles also struggled to climb the pass, and law enforcement told multiple motorists to turn around and drive back down.
The first snowfall of the season often catches drivers unprepared for conditions. A permanent trailer ban takes effect on the pass November 15.
