EDINBURG, TEXAS — U.S. Border Patrol agents and Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies found 20 people concealed inside a tractor-trailer at a truck stop in Edinburg on August 20 after a K-9 unit alerted to the vehicle following a report about a suspicious commercial rig.

The Rio Grande Valley Sector said agents deployed the canine after receiving the tip. Following a positive alert, agents and deputies moved in and discovered the 20 individuals hidden inside the trailer. The driver was taken into custody at the scene.

Border Patrol described the incident as a life-endangering human smuggling attempt. The agency did not release the driver’s identity, the name of the truck stop, cargo information, or nationalities of those found inside. No charges have been publicly announced. No carrier or trucking company was identified.

“Those who endanger lives for profit will be found, arrested, and held accountable,” Border Patrol said.
