STREETSBORO, OHIO — A 29-year-old Kent man was killed early Saturday morning after his Nissan Altima crossed into the northbound lanes of State Route 43 and struck a tractor-trailer head-on, causing catastrophic damage to the car and an engine fire in the truck that was quickly contained.

Streetsboro Police received a 911 call from the truck driver at 2:28 a.m. on August 22. The driver, a 55-year-old Akron man, reported he had been involved in a head-on collision and that his engine compartment had caught fire. Officers, fire, and EMS were immediately dispatched to the 10300 block of SR-43.

Initial evidence indicates the southbound Nissan traveled left of center into the northbound lane and struck the 2023 International tractor-trailer head-on in a 50 mph zone. The Nissan suffered catastrophic damage. The engine fire was contained within the engine compartment and was extinguished shortly after officers arrived. There was no indication the fire reached the passenger compartment of the Nissan.

The 29-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was shaken up but had no visible injuries. His name is being withheld pending family notification.

The Summit Metro Crash Team, composed of police departments across Summit and Portage Counties, was called to handle the full investigation. SR-43 was closed between Ethan/Crane Road and Frost Road until the scene was cleared, reopening at 7:40 a.m.
