VIRGINIA — Virginia State Police will run a concentrated 48-hour enforcement detail along the full 299-mile length of Interstate 64 on August 20 and 21, targeting distracted driving, impaired driving, speed, and seatbelt violations under an operation called DISS-RUPT.
The operation name reflects its four focus areas: Distracted driving, Impaired driving, Speed compliance, and Seat belt Safety. The goal is zero fatal crashes during the enforcement window.
“Although we are seeing a decrease in fatalities across Virginia roadways, our mission to preserve life and protect the vulnerable continues,” said Captain Brian Olha, Commander of the VSP Chesapeake Field Division.
VSP reminded drivers of Virginia’s hands-free law, which prohibits holding a personal communications device while driving. GPS and phone calls are permitted as long as the device is not in the driver’s hand. Speed limits on Virginia interstates do not exceed 70 mph. Impaired driving of any kind, including buzzed driving, is illegal.
Operation DISS-RUPT patrols will continue on a rotating basis on interstates 64, 95, 81, and 66 following this week’s detail.
