California Inspectors Find Big Rig Air Brake Line Repaired With Electrical Tape and Zip Ties; CHP Warns Air Brakes Operate Under High Pressure and This Fix Is a Serious Hazard

RAINBOW, CALIFORNIA — CHP Rainbow Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility inspectors found a creative but dangerous fix on a big rig’s brake system recently, a green thermoplastic air line that should have been replaced had instead been patched together with electrical tape and zip ties.

CHP acknowledged the resourcefulness but made the safety concern clear. Air brake lines operate under high pressure and endure constant heat and vibration on the highway. Tape and plastic zip ties cannot hold up under those conditions, making the repair a serious hazard waiting to fail.

“Let’s keep those rigs safe out there,” CHP said.
