TIPPECANOE COUNTY, INDIANA — Multiple 911 callers flagged down Indiana State Police just before 1 p.m. on August 9 after watching a tractor-trailer weave across lanes on southbound Interstate 65 in Tippecanoe County, leading Trooper Fike to locate the truck near mile marker 175 and confirm the erratic driving firsthand before pulling it over.
The driver, Mykola Velga, 63, of Brooklyn, New York, was found to have a BAC of .15 or higher. He was arrested on a charge of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated with a BAC of .15 or More, a Class A Misdemeanor, and booked into the Tippecanoe County Jail. A commercial vehicle inspection conducted at the stop resulted in Velga also being placed out of service.
“Operating a commercial motor vehicle while impaired poses a significant danger to other motorists due to the size and weight of these vehicles. The Indiana State Police reminds motorists that impaired driving can have serious and potentially deadly consequences, particularly when it involves a commercial motor vehicle traveling on an interstate,” ISP said.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
