MERCED COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — A 55-year-old El Nido man was arrested July 28 following a two-month investigation into diesel fuel thefts targeting agricultural operations in Merced and Madera counties, with investigators believing he stole more than 500 gallons of tax-exempt red diesel from local farmers.
The Merced County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Bureau, working in partnership with the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, executed multiple search warrants as part of the investigation before arresting Andrew Roggero. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges or arrests may follow.
Red diesel is a tax-exempt fuel dyed red to indicate it is for off-road agricultural and equipment use only. Theft of agricultural fuel directly impacts farming operations and their bottom line.
“Agricultural fuel thefts have a direct financial impact on local farmers and can disrupt critical farming operations. The Merced County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to protecting the agricultural community and holding those responsible for these crimes accountable,” MCSO said.
