VISALIA, CALIFORNIA — A CHP commercial vehicle officer in the Visalia area stopped what the agency called a dangerous and illegal tow job after spotting a vehicle being hauled down the highway with no rear tires — just bare metal rims grinding on the pavement.
CHP said the situation directly violates California Vehicle Code 27465(b), which prohibits operating a motor vehicle on the highway with tires worn to the fabric or cords. In this case, the rubber was gone entirely.
The dangers are straightforward. Metal rims on asphalt provide zero traction for braking or steering. Bare wheels gouge road surfaces. Shredded tire remnants and metal sparks become hazards for every driver behind the vehicle.
“Always ensure your vehicle — and any vehicle you are towing — has safe, fully inflated tires with proper tread depth before hitting the road,” CHP said.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
