Semi-Truck Collides With Ambulance Transporting Crash Victim, Causing Rollover in Winchester; Patient and Medic Survive

Share

WINCHESTER, TENNESSEE — An ambulance transporting a crash victim was knocked over after being hit by a tractor-trailer at a Franklin County intersection Tuesday morning, leaving a medic seriously injured and shutting down part of the roadway.

The Winchester Police Department responded around 8:30 a.m. to the intersection of Highway 64 and SR-16 following reports of a collision involving an ambulance and a semi-truck. First responders arrived to find the ambulance overturned in the grassy median.

Crash Occurred While Patient Was in Transport

Police said the ambulance had just cleared a separate crash scene in Huntland and was en route to a hospital in Winchester with a patient onboard when the incident occurred.

Investigators said the tractor-trailer clipped the ambulance, causing it to spin and roll over before coming to rest upside down in the median.

Injuries Reported

One medic inside the ambulance sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, according to police.

The patient being transported was moved to another emergency vehicle and taken to the hospital. Authorities said the patient’s injuries — from both the initial crash and the ambulance rollover — were not considered life-threatening.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
