NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE — A 27-year-old commercial truck driver is facing multiple charges after allegedly crashing his semi into several vehicles on Interstate 24 East in Nashville Tuesday night, then fleeing the scene on foot while carrying a metal bar and trying to flag down passing cars — telling officers that other drivers were trying to box him in and kill him, and that his own boss had set him up.

Metro Nashville Police responded to mile marker 54 on I-24 East for reports of a tractor-trailer crash. An officer arrived to find visible debris in the left two lanes. After speaking with another semi driver whose truck had been struck, she approached the suspect’s rig parked on the left shoulder. The driver, identified as Spencer Woods, was already out of the cab and walking away from the scene while holding a metal bar and attempting to stop passing vehicles on the interstate.

When the officer issued commands to stop, Woods hopped over the median wall and fled. Backup units including Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers responded and took Woods into custody after briefly shutting down the interstate.

Woods was acting erratically and telling officers that other drivers on the interstate were “after him” and had tried to box him in to kill him. He also claimed his boss had set him up. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for a medical evaluation. Following his evaluation, Woods was booked on three counts of leaving the scene of a crash causing damage, evading arrest, and disorderly conduct.

Of the three drivers whose vehicles were struck, one suffered minor injuries and another had her vehicle towed due to damage.
