LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — A truck driver nearing retirement was killed after a speeding car attempted to pass his turning rig and slammed into the cab, triggering a fiery crash that left both drivers dead.
The crash occurred last week at the intersection of Simmons Street and Citizen Avenue in North Las Vegas. Police said the tractor-trailer was turning into an industrial complex at the end of the driver’s shift when the incident unfolded.
Crash Involved Attempted Pass Around Turning Rig
According to investigators, the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted to get around the semi-truck as it slowed to make the turn. The vehicle then collided directly with the cab of the truck.
The impact resulted in both vehicles becoming fully engulfed in flames. First responders arrived to find the tractor-trailer and passenger vehicle burning.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Driver Identified as Veteran Trucker
The truck driver was identified as 75-year-old Terry Bilton, who had spent more than three decades behind the wheel. Family members said he was at the end of his shift and preparing to step into semi-retirement.
Bilton’s family learned of the crash after they were unable to reach him. One of his granddaughters went to the scene and was informed he had been killed.
Family Shares Plans Cut Short
Family members said Bilton had been planning a move to Big Bear, California, with his wife, and their home was already listed for sale.
He was described as a grandfather of 15 who stayed in close contact with his grandchildren and was known for his involvement in dirt bike racing.
A GoFundMe has been established to assist with funeral expenses, legal costs, and other related needs.
Investigation Ongoing
Police continue to investigate the crash and are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the driver of a gray Tesla believed to have been in the area at the time.
Authorities said the individual may have witnessed events leading up to or immediately after the crash and are urging them to contact the North Las Vegas Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
